Shiraz, (pop 1,042 m) 470km ride from Yazd through couple of mountain ranges and arid desert. It was the capital during the Zand period, 1747-79. The city itself is quite pretty, with several gardens, a fort with its own leaning tower, and several mosques worth while visiting. However the main reason for coming is to visit the ruins of Persepolis, 40km north of the city.

Persepolis. It is the best preserved of Persia's ruin cities, and the finest legacies of the greatest Achaemenian empire, which ruled Persia between 559 and 330 BC.
However we seem to have got here rather late as the city had been looted and burnt by Alexander the Great, defaced by marauding Arabs whilst spreading Islam, and the remains had been further looted by the English (go and visit British Museum for the best bits), French (Louvre) and the Germans. / Persepolis.
