Sonıa,s parents joıned us ın Istambul and spent a week wıth us. We all agreed that one of the best places ın Istambul were the bazaars.
The pıcture on the top ıs of the Grand Bazaar, the other 2 are of the Egıptıan or the Spıces Bazaar.

Mıs padres han estado con nosotros una semana en Estambul y lo hemos pasado estupendamente.
Todos somos de la opınıon de que una de las mejores sıtıos de Estambul son los bazares, con un monton de vıdılla y todo tıpo de cosas a la venta.
La prımera foto arrıba a la ızquıerda es del Gran Bazar y las otras dos son del Bazar Egıpcıo o de las Especıas.

Istambul ıs full of mosques, 2 of the most beautıful are the Blue Mosque, decarated wıth ceramıc tıles from Iznıc, and Hagıa Sophıa formerly Saınt Sophıa.
The nıght shot ıs of the Blue Mosque, nıcely lıt for the Ramadan festıvıtıes. The ınterıor shots are of Hagıa Sophıa, orıgınally decorated wıth gorgeous mosaıcs when ıt was buılt ın the Bızantıum era. However almost all of them had been rendered over wıth plaster when ıt was converted ınto a mosque.

The whole place ıs very very lıvely, specıally at nıght. There are thousand of people on the street, markets and temporary tents have been set up to celebrate Ramadan. It ıs quıte a spectıcle to see hundreds of people pıcnıcıng ın the open areas between the 2 mosques, all waıtıng for the clock to strıke 7,00pm to break theır fastıng.

We arrived in Istambul on the 24th. The traffic on the highway as we were coming into the city was something as expected, no prisoners taken.

The city is enormous, sprawled onto the hills with all sorts of buildings one on top of the next. The commercial centre with high rise office buildings is quite large.

There are 2 bridges connecting the European and Asian sides of the city, both beautiful suspension bridges.

Llegamos a Estambul el 24 de septiembre. El trafico en la autopista segun entrabamos en la ciudad era tal y como esperabamos, marica el ultimo.

La ciudad es enorme, extendiendose por las colinas cercanas a la costa, con todo tipo de edificios unos encima de otros. La zona de edificacion de tipo comercial en altura es bastante grande.

Hay 2 puentes conectando los lados europeo y asiatico de la ciudad, ambos son preciosos puentes colgantes de esos que ya no se hacen.

We arrived in Turkey on the 23rd of September. The road from Kondolovo, Bulgaria, to the Turkish border at Malko Tarnovo was horrendous (full of potholes) - Bulgarians aren't probably too keen on having too many border crossings with the Turks. We encountered some interesting four legged traffic on our way up the wet hills as you can see from the picture!.

Nessebar is around 100km south of Varna. A popular tourist destination but luckly the last week of September is end of busy season and though it is still warm there aren't many people around. The whole coast line is being densely developed, which is a pity. Along the same lines, Nessebar island has been turned into a paradise for souvenir shops and restaurants, however the place has 3 very nice small medieval churches and has a pleasant feel to it.

We had planned to go to Burgas today but decided to stay a second day because of the rain.

Nessebar esta a aprox. 100km de Varna. Es una localidad costera de tipo turistico de bastante exito, no obstante, como estamos casi a finales de Septiembre no hay mucha gente. Toda la costa en esta zona se esta llenando de construcciones de tipo turistico y de segunda vivienda, lo cual es una pena, la verdad. De manera un poco parecida la isla de Nessebar se ha convertido en un paraiso para las tiendas de souvenir y restaurantes, sin embargo tiene tres iglesitas de medievales la mar de bonitas y ha logrado mantener una atmosfera la mar de agradable.


Habiamos planeado ir a Burgas hoy, pero al final con esto de que esta lloviendo a cantaros hemos decidido quedarnos un segundo dia en Nessebar.

Arrived in Bulgaria on the 19th. Got through a very quiet border point without any hassle, with a surprisingly friendly Romanian border guard!. Road along the coast into Varna was dead quiet, but we had our first day of (heavy) rain.

Managed to find a nice hotel close to the centre and place looks very very nice. Varna is claimed to be the 'uncrowned' capital of the Black Sea coast. The town was established in the 6th c. BC. According to the Archaeological Museum which we have visited this morning, there are remains of civilisations dating back to 10.000 BC, making this the oldest European settlements!. The treasures displayed in the exhibition were fantastic, not only because they went from the Neolithic age, to Hellenistic, Roman, fantastic Byzantium remains but because they were simply beautiful... apparently the first gold ornaments crafted in the world were discovered in the Varna lakes which is now submerged under 10m of water.

People are quite friendly and helpful. This town of around half a million people has a very upmarket feel to it (for an ex-communist country). People are well dressed, there are lots of trendy shops and cafes around. Most of the old city centre has been pedestrianised similar to Salzburg. It is also connected with a large garden by the sea side which makes it an ideal place to walk and relax.

Llegamos a Bulgaria el 19. Cruzamos por un puesto fronterizo muy tranquilo, con un guardia rumano sorprendentemente amable. La carretera hasta Varna estaba muy tranquila, pero nos llovio por primera vez(y bastante fuerte).

Conseguimos encontrar un hotel la mar de 'apanao' y cerca del centro, y en seguida nos fuimos a dar una vuelta. Dicen que Varna es la capital del Mar Negro. El primer asentamiento en la zona se establecio aprox. 10.000 a.de C., lo que la convierten en el primero de Europa - esta manana hemos estado en el Museo Arqueolgico donde tenian una exposicion muy interesante, como ya habreis adivinado!. Los tesoros expuestos eran realmente fantasticos, no solamente porque iban desde el neolitico a Bizancio, sino porque ademas eran muy muy bellos. Segun parece los primeros ornamentos de oro del mundo han sido descubiertos en los asentamientos de los lagos de Varna que actualmente se encuentran sumergidos bajo 10m de agua.

La gente es muy amable y atenta. Esta ciudad de aproximadamente medio millon de habitantes tiene un aire moderno (para un pais ex-comunista). La gente va bien vestida por la calle, hay muchas tiendas chulas y un monton de cafes con terrazas. La mayor parte del casco antiguo esta peatonalizado como en Salzburgo. Esta ademas conectado con unos jardines enormes que corren paralelos a la playa, lo que lo hacen un lugar ideal para pasear y relajarse.

Constanta was a bit of a disappointment. There was very little to see or do. It is very much a port town than anything else. The old centre is non existent and the new commercial area is choked with traffic. The place is virtually run down and nothing positive has happened for a long time.
The route to Bulgarian border more or less follows the Black sea cost and we did stop at a border town of Vama Veche before crossing to Bulgaria. The place was deserted as it was off season but the water was warm and to our surprise the sea water tasted more fresh than salt water.

Constanta ha sido de lo mas decepcionante, nada que ver, nada que hacer... Es mas una localidad portuaria que de veraneo. El casco antiguo es practicamente inexistente, y las zonas nuevas estan 'acolapsadas' con trafico. La ciudad esta muy deteriorada, nada bueno ha pasado por alli en mucho tiempo, y parece que nada vaya a pasar en un futuro inmediato!.
La ruta hacia la frontera con Bulgaria corre paralela al Mar Negro. De camino a la frontera paremos en Vama Veche. El sitio estaba un poco desierto porque la temporada de veraneo no se extiende hasta Septiembre como en otros sitios. El agua estaba bastante templada y, para nuestra sorpresa, no tenia un contenido muy alto en sal, casi mas parecia agua dulce que agua de mar.

As expected the progress through Romania is slow and spent the first night in Arad, nothing to mention second night Alba Iulia which suppose to have some Roman ruins, but right now we are in the middle of Romania, a place called Sinala, The place is popular with the locals. And the road down from Sibiu to Sinala through the mountains was the best bit we have had so far in Romania and we will be staying here two nights before heading down to Black Sea town of Constanta.
Romania is a very different place to Hungary that we left couple of days ago. Roads are bad, drivers are worse, and place is in a sorry state generally. But the country side looks beautiful and feels more like Spring than Autumn.
And we already had our first puncture but managed to get it sorted this morning.

Nuestro avance por Rumania es lento, como esperabamos. Pasamos la primera noche en Arad (nada especial, la verdad) y la segunda en Alba Iulia (que se supone que tiene unas ruinas romanas impresionante que no lo son tanto). Ahora estamos en el centro de Rumania, en Sinaia. Las carreteras en general no estan muy bien que digamos, pero el tramo entre Brasov y Sinai, entre las montanas, estuvo muy bien. Nos vamos a quedar aqui un par de noches y luego iremos hacia Constanta,en el mar Negro.
Rumania es bastante distinta de Hungria. Las carreteras son bastante malas y los conductores aun peores. El sitio en general da un poco de pena. Los paisajes son bonitos, y casi parece mas primavera que otono.
Ya hemos sufrido nuestro primer pinchazo pero lo hemos arreglado ya esta manana.

We have just spent 2 very sunny days in Budapest. Camping was very very nice, met another German couple, Klaus and Maria. They have been giving us coffee in the morning and 2 warm blankets for the night, how kind is that?
Budapest is surprisingly nice. Not too big, right size for sightseeing in 2-3 days. Fantastic views from couple of hills south of the city (Buda) and a nice collection of bridges. Traffic not too bad, except for a taxi driver who tried to run us over and ended up with a big dent on his car!
Language is... this is too difficult to describe. Hungarian has nothing, I repeat, nothing to do with any other language you might know. We have been feeling a bit lost at times as there arent many signs in English, and not many people speak english.
We will be leaving the city tomorrow morning to Romania.

Chatines hemos pasado 2 dias la mar de buenos en Budapest. El tiempo ha estado estupendo, muy soleado. El camping esta divino, muy limpio y tranquilo (Athula dice que no, que los perros no lo dejan dormir de noche). Hemos topado con otra pareja de alemanes muy amables, bueno a mable es decir poco porque nos han estado preparando cafelito por las mananas y nos han prestado un par de mantas para que nos las echemos por las noches, increible, no?.
Budapest esta muy bien. Tiene un tamano ideal para visitarla en 2-3 dias. Hay unas vistas fantasticas desde un par de colinas al sur de la ciudad (Buda), y una colecion de puentes muy lindos.
Comunicacion... dificil de creer y de describir. El hungaro no tiene nada que ver con ningun otro idioma que conozcamos normalmente. Nos hemos sentido un poco perdidos a veces porque no hay muchos carteles con traducciones a otros idiomas, y casi nadie habla otra cosa que no sea un aleman chapurreao.
Manana nos vamos pa Rumania!

We are in Viena now for 3 nights. This place is big! Managed to find the camping site- quite close to the centre- thanks to some locals. We have visited few interesting buildings, most of them Secession-Jugenstil by Otto Wagner, Loos... Our favourite so far has been the Secession Pavillion with Klimt's frescoes inside and some of Loos' shop fronts.
Weather has been very nice and sunny during the day, but freezing at night!
Tomorrow we'll head towards Budapest.

Estamos pasando 3 dias en Viena. Este sitio es enorme!. Hemos tenido suerte y el camping esta bastante cerca del centro.
El centro es muy bonito, todo esta muy cuidado y limpio, con palacios impresionantes por todas partes!. Hemos estado en varios edificios interesantes, casi todos de los periodos de la Secession y Jugenstil, de Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos, Olbright... Nuestro favorito de momento es el Pabellon de la Secession con los frescos de Klimt en el interior, y tambien algunas de las tiendas de Loos.
El tiempo ha estado bastante bueno, con solecito y buena temperatura de dia pero bastante frio de noche.
Manana nos vamos ya a Budapest!!

We did not spend ant time in Germany other than riding through.
We camped over night in Stuttgart and met this very friendly couple, Walter and Anneliese, who gave us a box of Austrian chocolate when we told them that we were heading Austria.

We are pleasantly supprised about how nice Salzburg is. The weather has just been perfect.

Salzburgo nos ha sorprendido muchisimo. Es un sitio precioso, el tiempo es estupendo, hasta el camping donde estamos tiene magnificas vistas y un encargado que habla espanol!!

Spent few days with Martijn Ranoe and little Alejandro in The Hague.
didn't do much but just relax.
Very grateful for Martijn and Ranoe who have been taking care of us so generously during our stay as well as Martijn's father Bram who has kindly given us a mobile phone to tale alone.


Pasamos unos dias estupendos en La Haza con Martijn, Ranoe y el pequeno Alejandro (mas lindoooo). No hicimos mucho, la verdad, nos relamos, charlamos... la mar de bien despues de todo el estres de la salida.
El padre de Martijn nos relago un telefono movil para usar solo en caso de emergencia. El numero lo daremos en la proxima entrega (nos lo hemos dejado en el camping y no nos sabemos el numero de memoria).
